There is a lot of confusion about ingredients these days, particularly when it comes to defining the term natural and understanding preservative systems.
Our stance on these and other issues is clear. We believe in transparency. People with sensitive skin are likely to be more informed and know their skin perhaps better than those with normal skin. It follows therefore that they may also know what specifically to avoid applying to their skin. We prefer to provide all the facts in a comprehensible format, and then let you draw your own conclusions.
As yet there is no firm legal definition of the term natural, however it seems acceptable that anything with a minimum of 90% natural ingredients is deemed a natural product, which is why we describe all our products as natural. Please review our ingredient glossary document for more information on our ingredients. The way we define natural is simple: anything that is synthetic or semi synthetic is not natural in our eyes. However, don’t forget that there are many remarkable synthetic products available that are 100% safe to use, and the few we do use have been chosen especially for their performance and safety. We list the natural percentages of our products below.
These are added to products to prevent them from forming microbial growth and degrading. Preservatives come in many forms, with some occurring naturally. We've list below the preservatives we use in our range of products. We use them in tiny concentrations, for example the Phenoxythanol used in our Sensitive Support daily moisturiser equates to around 0.0005% of the entire product!
You will find a wealth of information on the internet for all the ingredients listed below. Obtaining a balanced view is however difficult; this is an area full of agendas! We've made the decision to use the following because in our opinion, bearing in mind the concentrations we use them in and having closely reviewed the research, we feel convinced of their safety and performance.
This is a chemical compound used as a fungicide and bactericide.
This is an organic chemical compound and bactericide, often known as Rose ether.
A 100% natural gentle mineral salt preservative that is considered to be safe and mild, thanks to its long-term safety record and non-toxic profile. Potassium Sorbate is non-irritating and non-sensitizing.
These two extracts form the main preservative system for our products but we also use them for their conditioning qualities. These extracts are 100% natural and come from Honeysuckle and Japanese Honeysuckle, however they have also been nicknamed as "natural parabens". Some scientists argue that their chemical makeup is in fact different to synthetic parabens, and therefore that they should not be labelled as parabens. We are undecided on this issue at present, but it is our policy to draw your attention to it all the same. It is also the reason why we don't describe our products as simply paraben free.
We have chosen not to include the following ingredients because we believe they’re not essential, and additionally, we feel there is confusion and uncertainty about such ingredients.
Whilst all our products are made using natural ingredients, research suggested that using only organic ingredients where available, could sacrifice product consistency, cause labelling confusion and lead to increase costs, so that’s why we decided not to go down the organic route at this point in time.
